Organization-
The United Spanish American War Society is an association of independent living
history groups with a set of shared standards and holding an annual event. The
USAWS shall file for Federal non-profit corporation status and a one time fee of
$5 is to be paid by all members to cover the cost of the preparation and filing
of incorporation papers. Any surplus from this fee will be rolled over to costs
of the annual event.
The USAWS shall be governed by the directors who shall be the presidents of the
member units. A chairman will be selected annually.
The USAWS shall have no control over member units regarding their organization or
activities. USAWS members are requested to conduct themselves, their units and
activities in a manner that will reflect credit upon the hobby, the USAWS and
the era of the Spanish American War.
The USAWS has no rank structure of its own. All ranks will be within the member
units. At the annual event unit rank will be based upon number of participants,
i.e. 5 members for a Cpl., 8 for Sgt., 12 for 1st Sgt. Gun owners (artillery or
Gatlins) may be Sgt. At the annual event officers will be elected if deemed
warranted by the number of participants.
Membership-
New units may enter the USAWS upon approval of all directors. Prospective units
must submit a membership list (names, address and phone#) and impression standards consisting of the items required for a minimum field uniform, a list of suppliers for the required items and several good photos of uniformed members. The chairman will circulate it among the
directors. In lieu of which, existing USAWS standard may be adopted. The number
of members and or special equipment (ie. artillery) will be considered with
each application, i.e. 5 for Inf. or 2 for a Gun unit.
Individuals may join the USAWS by becoing members of existing units. Individual civilian impressions
will be permitted. The new impression standards (with photos) must be
submitted to the chairman and approved by the directors.
The directors may approve the application, offer a conditional approval subject
to USAWS recommendations, or decline the application. It is to be a tenet of
the USAWS to assist new members and units to gain membership by providing
information and suggestions in an equal and positive manner.
